XFP is a hot-swappable, low-circuit, serial-to-serial optical transceiver that supports SONET OC-192, 10Gbps Ethernet, 10Gbps Fiber Channel and G709 links. XFP's multi-source protocol (MSA) directly uses the XFI interface specification to define the power interface, which fully meets the limits of the SDH optical transport network. Compared to 1X9 and SFP modules, XFP has a higher transmission rate and transmission capacity, but also makes the application of Ethernet extended to the MAN and WAN.

The XFP package is smaller than the earlier XENPAK and X2 packages, XFP while the XENPAK & X2 optical modules are slightly larger than the size of the original small package pluggable optical module (SFP). XFP As shown in the following figure, the structure of the XFP contains five components:

XFP is a low-cost WDM transmission technology for metro access layer. XFP uses CWDM technology, through the external wavelength division multiplexer, XFP the different wavelengths of optical signals together, through an optical fiber transmission, thereby saving fiber resources.
